These sketches show aspects of Nuremberg, Bavaria. Nuremberg Castle is depicted in the uppermost view, which extends onto the folio opposite (Tate D30717; Turner Bequest CCCIV 46). The Castle was the imperial residence of the Holy Roman Emperors and Kings of Germany. It overlooks the city from a high ridge and is protected by a network of medieval walls, one of which, the Neutorgraben, is depicted in the foreground.
The Königstor seen from the Königstrasse is depicted in the sketch at rear.
