Here Turner has produced two sketches showing unidentified riverside towns, each with a church and boats moored at the banks of the waterway. The inscription ‘Amruck’ at top right possibly refers to the town of Rück, Bavaria, which Turner would have passed as he followed the River Main from Würzburg to Frankfurt. ‘Am Rück’ roughly translates as ‘at’ or ‘in’ Rück.
