The cursory view at rear, produced with the sketchbook turned horizontally, depicts Frankfurt Cathedral. Turner has captured this view from the end of a narrow street in the city, looking in the direction of the Cathedral’s soaring gothic tower. The artist travelled through Frankfurt on his route back to England.
The other buildings depicted do not appear to have been sketched at Frankfurt. They may show buildings in Prague.
