This is a view of the Eastern Old Gate or Ooster Oude Hooft-Poort in Rotterdam’s Oude Haven. This sixteenth century building marked the entrance to the city’s canal system from the River Maas (Meuse). In earlier sketchbooks Turner produced a number of detailed studies of the building, which was demolished in the mid 1800s (see Tate D13020–D123021, D19484; Turner Bequest CLXII 13a–14, CCXV 53).
