With the page turned horizontally, the view is north to the small but prominently sited pilgrimage church of St Salvator on the left, above the Danube just east of Donaustauf, a few miles downriver of Regensburg (see under folio 18 verso; D31311).1 The classical Walhalla memorial is seen beyond to the east, surmounting its complex sequence of stone steps and platforms, a separate detail of which appears at the top right, along with a second profile of the distant hills in the main view at the top left.
The subject was identified by Cecilia Powell;2 for numerous contemporary views of Donaustauf, St Salvator’s Church and the nearby Walhalla in this sketchbook and elsewhere, see under folio 33 verso opposite (D31341).3
