As identified by Cecilia Powell,1 this horizontal view is to the west along Regensburg’s medieval walls overlooking the River Danube west of the city centre, looking upstream past some of the numerous towers formerly lining the south bank. The viewpoint is uncertain, as only the most westerly of the chain, the Prebrunnturm, now survives in the Herzogspark, and the quays are tree-lined. There is a view in the opposite direction on folio 40 recto opposite (D31354).
For numerous contemporary views of Regensburg in this sketchbook and elsewhere, see under folio 18 verso (D31311).2
