With the page turned horizontally, the main view is north-west across the River Danube to Donaustauf, with the spire of St Michael’s Church below the ruins of the castle on the skyline. The prospect turning eastwards to the right is continued in the smaller sketch at the top right, with the pilgrimage church of St Salvator and the rectangular outline of the Walhalla on the skyline beyond. The subject was identified by Cecilia Powell.1 For numerous contemporary views of Donaustauf, the pilgrimage church and the Walhalla in this sketchbook and elsewhere, see under folio 33 verso (D31341);2 for nearby Regensburg, see under folio 18 verso (D31311).3
Below, the other way up, is a cramped sketch from later in the tour, showing the town of Coburg and the fortress of Veste Coburg beyond to the east, through trees which are continued a little way across the gutter onto folio 40 verso opposite (D31355); again, the subject was identified by Powell.4 For many other Coburg views, see under folio 1 verso (D31278).5
