With the page turned horizontally, Passau is shown to the north across the River Inn from the Mariahilfberg, as Cecilia Powell has noted; the view is continued to the right on folio 52 recto opposite (D31378), with the two drawings forming a disjointed panorama.1 Here, the cathedral is identifiable by its dome to the right of centre above the Innbrücke, against the backdrop of the slopes on the far side of the River Danube, out of sight beyond the central Altstadt peninsula.
Although the various defensive towers along the Innstadt bank below are no longer evident, a similar overall prospect is still possible from in front of the Mariahilf church. For numerous contemporary views of Passau in this sketchbook and elsewhere, see under folio 48 verso (D31371).
