The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally. Finberg suggested in might show the ‘Castle of Stauf, near the Walhalla, Ratisbon’,1 meaning the ruins above Donaustauf, east of Regensburg; see under folio 33 verso (D31341); however, as Cecilia Powell recognised,2 it is one of several showing Hals, near Passau, looking north over the houses to the ruins of Burg Hals, climbing the spine of its rocky ridge (now wooded) within a tight meander of the River Ilz. Turner’s ‘4’ is apparently in sequence with three numbered Hals sketches on folio 61 verso (D31397); for various other contemporary views of the village and castle on adjacent pages of this sketchbook and elsewhere, see under folio 58 verso (D31391).
