With the page turned horizontally, Trieste’s hilltop Castello di San Giusto is seen across the valley to its north, from an area since much developed. The campanile of Santa Maria Maggiore is seen below to the right, on the slopes leading down to the harbour to the west. This is one of a sequence of views in and around the Adriatic port city of Trieste made working inwards from the back of this sketchbook; see under folio 57 recto (D30109).1
