A label in the artist's handwriting on the back of the picture reads: ‘Marshal Jozeph Anton, Prince Poniatowsky's last charge at the Battle of Leipzig, Oct. 18th 1813, (Within an hour afterwards he was drowned whilst crossing the river Elster, trying to turn the pursuit of the Allies.)
