‘Leeds’ was made while Frost was Gregory Fellow at Leeds University and refers specifically to the landscape. It relates closely to a painting of the same year entitled ‘Winter Landscape’ (British Council Collection, repr. The British Council Collection 1938–1984, 1984, p.61) which depicts similar spiral motifs. According to Frost, ‘The spirals were to do with the movement made in the sheep's wool by the wind in the Dales.’ Frost produced a number of paintings in this period emphasising the contrast between black and white which he had experienced in the snow-covered landscape. The use of drypoint in P07985 emphasises the blackness of the line. Frost had used this medium on a number of previous occasions in St Ives.
