This is one of the preparatory studies for the almost life-size ‘Bull’ exhibited in plaster at the Sculpture 1850 and 1950 exhibition, Holland Park, 1957 (7); a bronze cast is now on the Alton Estate in London. The artist described it as an attempt to discover ‘an equivalent for the sheer physical power of the bull’. Two other studies were exhibited at the Hanover Gallery in 1957 (4, repr., and 5).
