The original artwork for the right-hand image in Print E [P03055] of Paolozzi’s suite of etchings ‘Cloud Atomic Laboratory’ 1971. The entry on this image in the text- sheet published with the suite reads: ‘VARGA—BILLBOARD—GIRL. (Winter Garden—Zanzibar). A 125-foot Varga displays her giant charms from a billboard in Times Square.’ The artist told the compiler (conversation, 7 June 1972) that the source of the image in T01475 was a now-defunct American magazine, Portfolio.
The catalogue entry on ‘Cloud Atomic Laboratory’ (P03051–P03058) outlines the stages by which the final images in that suite of etchings were derived from the original magazine and newspaper images. T01475 and T01476 are the final retouched states of two of these images before reproduction by photo-etching. The retouching was done by a Mr Barker.
