The River Colne at Hillingdon was near the house of Paul Nash's parents-in-law. Andrew Causey points out that the figures of two men bathing, drawn in pencil to the left of the bridge and visible in the photograph published in Lintott (loc.cit.) have been erased, probably by the artist shortly after the watercolour was acquired by John Carter.
