During Saint Phalle’s shooting period she began to create Altars and Cathedrals that she would shoot at and destroy. Altar O.A.S is a bronze cast of a work that Saint Phalle had made and shot. In an unholy mixture of religious iconography with rats, stuffed bats and pistols, the influence of her Catholic upbringing is clearly evident, as well as her distaste for the idea of institutionalised faith. In a further sign of her deepening political engagement, O.A.S was a right wing terrorist movement supporting the French invasion of Algeria at this time.
