Beauty is the mystery of life. It is not just in the eye. It is in the mind. It is our positive response to life.
Agnes Martin, 1989

American artist Agnes Martin (1912 – 2004) is one of the pre-eminent painters of the twentieth century whose abstract art and way of living had a significant influence on artists of her own time and subsequent generations. Because she preferred solitude to public exposure this exhibition is the first large-scale retrospective of her work since the early 1990s. It is also the first opportunity for UK and international audiences to engage with the full breadth of her practice, including her lesser-known early paintings and experimental works. The exhibition spans Martin’s entire career from the biomorphic paintings of the 1950s to her very last drawing.
