In 1977, Martin began to make untitled grey paintings. Her interest in abstract compositions with grey paint was to continue until 1992. As this room demonstrates, Martin’s grey paintings range from light grey works with horizontal bands, which are clearly related to Martin’s pencilled works of the late 1960s, to dark opaque paintings with fine stripes. This display draws attention to the range of different effects Martin was able to achieve with such reduced means. In many works, she painted each band from top to bottom, and rotated the canvases only when finished.
