Francis W. SARGANT 1870–1960

Sculptor in stone and bronze in the Italian Renaissance tradition. Born 10 January 1870 in London, younger brother of Mrs Sargant-Florence. Educated at New College, Oxford. Articled to the architect T.G. Jackson 1891–4. Studied at the Slade School 1895–6 and under Frampton and Dressler, and with Hildebrand at Florence and Munich 1899–1903. Worked mainly in Florence 1899–1914 and 1918–37, executing a memorial to Florence Nightingale in the Church of Santa Croce 1913. Also sculpted the stone reliefs for the War Memorial Chapel of Oakham School 1924–8. Served in the British Red Cross 1914–18. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1919, and R.B.S. Awarded O.B.E. 1919. Died at Cambridge 11 January 1960.
