Sir David LOW 1891–1963
Political cartoonist. Born 7 April 1891 at Dunedin, New Zealand. His first cartoons appeared in 1902 and from that year he worked for The Spectator, Christchurch; 1911 went to Australia and worked on the Sydney Bulletin; 1919 came to London, working on the Star 1919–27, the Evening Standard 1927–50, the Daily Herald 1950–3 and the Manchester Guardian 1953–63. His cartoons have been syndicated throughout the world and collections have also appeared in book form. In 1953 he published Ye Madde Designer on the technique of cartooning, and in 1956 his Autobiography. Knighted 1962. Died in London 19 September 1963.
