This belongs to a group of paintings of a reclining figure in an interior, on which Auerbach worked from 1966 to 1968. In these works Auerbach moved away from the dense build up of paint which is typical of his earlier work, as in 'Head of E.O.W. I' shown nearby. Instead he began to define form and space using thick lines which traverse areas of more thinly applied colour. Treating the space, the bed and the figure in this way, and with equal intensity, renders these elements more difficult to read. At the same time, however, the painting is invested with a bolder and more clear internal structure.
