Barns-Graham was born and trained in Scotland. In the late 1930s she moved to St Ives in Cornwall, where she became acquainted with Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo. La Geria is a formation of laval rock on the island of Lanzarote. Barns-Graham first visited the Canary Islands in the late 1950s and they have continued to influence her work. This drawing is a late example of her abiding fascination with natural forms, especially glaciers rocks and lava, first seen in her glacier paintings of 1949 to 1951.
