Baselitz returns to a more intimate scale for this series of forty-nine etchings. The group includes thirty-nine prints in black, four in green and six in green and black. Drawn directly on the plate, these linear figures continue the artist's investigation of the tension between abstraction and figuration by exploring the relationship of figure to ground. Ornament and colour are also used. Baselitz considers green a universal colour which signifies nature and perception. In a lecture in 1992, he said: 'Green is also the colour of space without images, the colour of imagelessness, ... the colour of compromise and of the median.'
