Benjamin began his career studying with Fernand Léger. In the late 1950s he became a follower of Peter Lanyon in St Ives before being awarded a scholarship to study at W Hayter’s print studio in Paris, known as ‘Atelier 17’. Benjamin’s Prisms of Water is from a set of seven prints inspired by a group of poems by the Scottish poet W S Graham. Benjamin and Graham shared a fascination with the power of the sea, an image which is explored in both the prints and the poems.
