In February 1942 Bomberg gained a commission from
the War Artists Advisory Committee to execute a painting showing the activities in one of the underground bomb stores that had been constructed in various sites around Britain. Bomberg was granted access to a bomb store at Burton-on-Trent and the eerie and ominous setting fired his imagination. He made numerous drawings and sketches and three oil paintings of which this is one. Although Bomberg's bomb store series is now regarded as a high point in the artist's career, the War Artists Advisory Committee selection panel considered the works too innovative and accepted only three drawings.
