One of a number of self-portraits. This was painted in the artist's studio at Ormond House, Richmond, and shows two paintings then in his collection, a nude by Ethel Walker and Tonks's ‘Temptation of Eve’ (two children). A closely related self-portrait of the same size, signed and dated 1926, shows the artist without spectacles and Gwen John's ‘Self-Portrait’ (now in the Tate Gallery, N05366) in place of the Ethel Walker; it is now in the Ferens Art Gallery, Hull (repr. Artwork, No.23, 1930, p.151).
