The painter shown in this portrait, Hilda Carline, was the elder sister of the artist. It was painted at his studio at Downshire Hill, Hampstead, London.

At this time Richard Carline was interested in painting in a strongly realistic style, and his sister has been treated in this manner. When asked about her red nose, the artist replied that she had a cold at the time and the ‘red nose was part of the objective truth that I aimed for’.
