N02123 IN THE HAYFIELD: TWO STUDIES
Stamped ‘J Charles’, the ‘J’ and ‘C’ in monogram, b.l. and inscribed ‘James Charles 76’ on reverse.
Pencil on sugar paper, 9 1/2×12 (24×30·5).
Presented by Professor Frederick Brown 1907.
See the note on N02122. Charles painted several pictures of hayfields and these drawings may have been preliminary studies, though they do not correspond exactly either to ‘In the Hayfield - East Ashling’ (repr. Black and White, 23 February 1907), or to ‘In Harvest Time’, said to have been the last landscape painted by him (repr. Art Journal, 1909, p.93).
