Pen, ink and watercolour, 15 1/2×11 1/4 (39·5×29).
Presented by Mrs F. Samuel, Mrs E. Bishop and Michel H. Salaman through the Contemporary Art Society 1941.
Coll: N05418-N05425 belong to a total of forty-six drawings which were distributed through the C.A.S. among the following institutions: British Museum Print Room; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; City Art Gallery, Manchester; Castle Museum and Art Gallery, Nottingham; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne; City Art Gallery, Wakefield; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; City Art Gallery, Glasgow; City Art Gallery, Leeds; National Museum of Wales, Cardiff; Art Gallery, Cheltenham; and Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield.
Exh: The exhibition at the Redfern Gallery in May 1941 contained a number of drawings for Wuthering Heights and N05418-N05425 may have been included, but it is not possible to identify them with certainty from the titles.
In 1932, when the artist's husband died, a Trust was formed by the above-mentioned donors to enable her to keep her studio in Gray's Inn and the Wuthering Heights drawings were acquired by this Trust for eventual distribution to various galleries, but she was allowed to retain them in the meantime in order to go on working on the project. However, the illustrations were never completed or published as a whole.
For another study for this subject see N05422. Catherine Linton fainted in Heathcliff's embrace as her husband entered the room shortly before her death: ‘I was sincerely glad to see that Catherine's arms had fallen relaxed and her head hung down’ (end of Chapter 15). Another drawing of the same scene in the artist's possession is inscribed: ‘Let me alone! If I've done wrong, I'm dying for it.’
The numbers inscribed on N05418 and A01064-A01072 relate to a list prepared at the time the drawings were distributed and do not signify their sequence as illustrations.
