N04939 GIBRALTAR FROM ALGECIRAS 1905
Inscr. ‘Conder’ b.l.
Canvas, 29 1/2×37 (74×93).
Presented by Mrs A. Cecil Lawson 1938.
Coll: Mrs A. Cecil Lawson was the artist's sister-in-law and may have acquired this painting direct from the artist's widow, since the picture remained unsold at the Leicester Galleries exhibition of 1913.
Exh: Leicester Galleries, January 1913 (66), as ‘View of Gibraltar’.
Conder visited Algeciras with his wife in 1905, returning home through Spain. A signed and dated picture, ‘Blue Waters, Algeciras’ 1905, is in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. The date is further corroborated by the chronology prepared by Mrs Florence Humphrey, now in the Tate Gallery archives (cf. N03645).
