In the 1830s, Constable began producing
a series of prints after his work, in collaboration with the engraver David Lucas. For the frontispiece he selected
a view of East Bergholt House at evening time, and in the foreground included
an artist sketching.

The Latin lettering on the print stressed
Constable's intimate association with the place. In translation it reads: 'This spot saw the day spring of my Life, Hours of Joy, and years of Happiness, This place first tinged my boyish fancy with a love of the art, This place was the origin of my fame'.
