Display caption

A few years after his honeymoon trip to stay with the Fishers in Dorset, Constable worked up his small sketch of Weymouth Bay into a larger, exhibition canvas. When in the 1830s he decided to make a print of the subject for the series English Landscape, he selected the finished painting for his model. Nevertheless the dramatic and atmospheric sky in the print seems closer in spirit to the original sketch. Although the print's title is simply Weymouth Bay, Dorsetshire, it carried the sub-title Tempestuous Evening in the list of contents which accompanied the series.
