Technique and condition

Painted in oil paints on a commercially white, oil primed linen canvas stretched onto its original stretcher.

The paints were applied vigorously in a buttery consistency, producing clear brushmarking and sharp impastos. Working wet-into-wet, many of the colours were intermixed on the canvas and on occasions the brush was loaded with more than one colour. The painted signature and date were added at the top right corner while the painting was wet.

The painting is in fine condition with only a few brittle age cracks and minor superficial damages. The varnish is a later addition and gives a uniform high gloss to the surface. The painting was surface cleaned and adjustments made to the frame on acquisition. The frame is not original being of recent manufacture.
