This drawing refers to the resignation
of the Government in March 1782, following
a vote of no confidence. The King is shown
at the left, leading his ministers, including Lord North and Henry, 2nd Lord Bathurst,
Lord President of the Council.

This is the first drawing by Dance to contain an overtly political subject. The figures
are shown as if they are in a classical frieze. Their white sheets mockingly link these modern politicians to Roman senators. Dance, who was by now independently wealthy, went on to become a Member
of Parliament himself.
