Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland, [title not known] date not known
Display caption
Dance-Holland has drawn this figure in a rapid, sketchy manner with a medium-soft graphite pencil. The work is primarily a line drawing with minimal shading. On the back of the sheet there is a dense layer of powdery red chalk. Close inspection of the front reveals fine, silvery lines indented in the paper which follow the outline and some of the details of the figure. These were produced by a metal stylus which was pressed into the paper in order to transfer the image by offsetting red chalk lines onto an underlying piece of paper.
