William Daniell's 'A Voyage Round Great Britain' (1814-25) was the most ambitious of the many topographical publications which were produced in England during the early years of the nineteenth century. Contemporary impressions from the series were issued hand-coloured; this example is a modern impression printed in 1979 when most of the 306 plates for 'A Voyage' were acquired by the Tate Gallery. Fingal's Cave had been accidentally discovered in 1772 by the eminent naturalist Joseph Banks, and soon became something of a place of pilgrimage for the generation of the romantic movement.
