One of the most significant Scottish artists of the early 20th century, JD Fergusson was a leading figure among the ‘Scottish Colourists’, who adopted the bright colours and simplified outlines of modern French painting, particularly the Fauves group. He visited Paris frequently and lived there from 1907 to 1914. Blue Beads is one of many studies by him of a modern type of female beauty. The title draws attention to its decorative intention enhanced by the heavy, rhythmic outline and expressive, bold colour.
