P07432 VALENTINE 1981
Inscribed ‘Flanagan Feb 12/81’ bottom centre and ‘Valentine’ and ‘1/30’
Linocut, printed by the artist and published by Waddington Graphics, 12×8 (30.5×20.3)
Purchased from Waddington Graphics (Grant-in-Aid) 1981
Lit: op.cit., no.175
Flanagan printed about seven copies of ‘Valentine’ before the edition of 30: the illustration on page 8 of the Llandudno catalogue is evidently one of these as the colour is not so flat and densely printed as in the editioned version. Both these linocuts were editioned by the artist in his own studio. ‘Pilgrim’ is related to Flanagan's sculptures on the same theme-the Long Man of Wilmington, cut into the North face of Windover Hill in Sussex. In these linear bronze sculptures the verticals are like the Pilgrim's staff and also like casting vents.
