The artist wrote (28 March 1962) that the picture was painted at his home in Blackheath in January–March 1961 and is one of a number of paintings of his wife Sheila: ‘The first was painted from life in, I think, 1955 ... a picture of the same title was shown in Bristol at the West of England Academy last autumn. This was a smaller picture and a reclining pose.’
