No. 8 in an edition of twelve casts made by H. S. Ede from the original sandstone carving in the Kettle’s Yard Collection. This is the ‘Head of a Boy’, sandstone, in Ede’s supplementary list of Gaudier’s works (loc. cit.). Although M. Menier (La Revue du Louvre, No. 3, 1965, p. 6) believes this to be one of Gaudier’s first three stone carvings, done (see Pound, Gaudier-Brzeska, 191 6, p. 87) to convince Epstein that he was accustomed to carving stone, this cannot be the case if a dating of 1914 is accepted, as several stone carvings are listed for 1913.
