During the 1920s and 1930s, Gordine worked on a series of sculptures that represent the physiognomic characteristics of different races. Javanese Head was modelled in the Far East. Gordine travelled to Singapore in 1929, after being commissioned to make six bronze heads to decorate the Town Hall in Singapore. The six heads were intended to represent the different nationalities living in the Malay Peninsula.

Dora Gordine was born in St. Petersburg in 1906 and died in London in 1991.
