This watercolour shows the view towards Naples across the Bay of Pozzuoli from the west. From the basin of the ‘Mare Morto’ (Dead Sea), which used to be part of the harbour of Misenum, the drifting smoke of Mount Vesuvius can be made out on the horizon. Serres annotated the watercolour with numbers corresponding to significant landmarks in the view which he described in a key on the reverse. This detailed information and key is commonly found on topographical prints and suggests that Serres many have intended the watercolour to be engraved.
