T01819 Kew Gardens from Richmond Hill
Inscribed ‘No 4 Kew Gardens from Richmond Hill Richmond R H Hilditch’ in ink on label on back; presumably in the artist’s own hand.
Canvas 8 x 14¿ (17.6 x 36.2) on board 7¼ x 14¾ (18.4 x 36.5).
Purchased (Grant-in-Aid) 1973.
Coll: ...; Leggatt, sold November 1947 to Major and the Hon. Mrs. Robert O’Brien, sold in aid of the Centenary Fund of the Hospital of St. John and St. Elizabeth, Christie’s 6 November 1956 (132), bought Ramsay; Boleyn Investments, sold Christie’s 23 November 1973 (45), bought M. Bernard for Tate Gallery.
Hilditch exhibited many views of this area throughout his working life and in view of the vagueness of contemporary catalogue entries it is impossible to associate this painting with anything shown by him at the British Institution and at Suffolk Street, although he did exhibit a ‘Kew Gardens from Richmond Hill’ at the R.A. 1865 (230).
Published in The Tate Gallery Report 1972–1974, London 1975.
