Minoru Hirata was a photo-journalist who made important work on the American-occupied island of Okinawa. In the 1960s, he also collaborated closely with performance artists in Tokyo, including Hi Red Center, Kyushu Faction and Yoko Ono. His distinctive approach contributed significantly to the way in which the performances were seen after the events themselves were over. In Dropping Event, for example, he adopts a range of sharp perspectives from above and below, in the tradition of modernist photography.
