P07377 (i)–(ii) FOR BERNARD JACOBSON 1979
Inscribed ‘Hodgkin 79’ bottom centre (both sheets) and ‘23/80’
Two-sheet lithograph with hand colouring, printed by Alan Cox at Sky Editions and published by Bernard Jacobson, 41 5/8×59 (105.7×150)
Purchased from Bernard Jacobson (Grant-in-Aid) 1980
This was the first of Hodgkin's prints to approach the scale of his paintings. It followed a group of much smaller hand-coloured lithographs and etchings made between 1977 and 1979. The hand-colouring is in watercolour (broad wash brushstrokes) and in wax crayon (the curved leaf-shapes). The print is on dyed paper: dying, printing and hand-colouring were all done at Sky Editions. The image is a scene on an Indian balcony at night, with banana trees below.
