The artist wrote (31 October 1956): ‘“Sienese Hills” was painted in April 1956. It was the last but one which I did of that particular landscape, which is a stretch of arid land 45 kms. South of Siena. It was painted in my studio from drawings and colour notes, which I did on the spot.’ A number of views of the country round Siena were included in the Leicester Galleries exhibition.
