T00478 PARADE 1961
Inscr. ‘Irwin’ b.r.
Paper collage, 48 1/4×30 (122·5×76).
Purchased from Gimpel Fils (Grant-in-Aid) 1962.
Exh: Gimpel Fils, January 1962 (3, repr. p.6).
The artist wrote (4 March 1962) that ‘Parade’ was the last picture completed before his exhibition at Gimpel Fils. The technique consists of tearing old posters into strips and pasting them face downwards on white paper. He added (13 March 1962): ‘I collect my material from a waste paper mill, which has about 200 tons of crutty paper to offer.’
