This woodcut is among Judd's earliest abstract prints, made just before he abandoned the use of curved lines in favour of straight horizontals and verticals. It belongs to a brief transitional phase in Judd's work between a more organic and figurative imagery and his mature rectilinear vocabulary. Judd deliberately allowed the grain of the woodblock and the cadmium red underpainting to show through the black ground, giving a sense of depth and texture to this print.
