Technique and condition
Lithograph on white wove paper made in 1983. Part of a portfolio called Eight By Eight, which includes eight prints made by eight individual artists (The Tate collection includes Andy Warhol, Sidewalk, 1983 from the same portfolio). Printed in blue ink, the image consists of a fin-like shape on its side centred on the sheet surrounded by blank paper support.
Lithography is a planographic technique based on the chemical resistance of oil and water. The image is applied to a grained aluminium plate (historically Bavarian Limestone) using a greasy ink (tusche) or crayon. The plate (or stone) is then etched by a wash of acid and gum arabic, which fixes the image and makes the blank surface receptive to water. When tusche is rolled over the surface it adheres to the artist's marks, but is repelled from the rest of the surface. Paper is then placed against its surface and the plate is run through a press. The print is inscribed in pencil in the bottom margin with the artists signature and edition number.
The Portfolio was published by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in an edition of two hundred and fifty with thirty artists proofs, six printers proofs, fifteen hors commerce, forty five trial proofs and three trial proof's/printers proofs. This print is number ninety eight in the edition. The portfolio was published to raise funds for Temporary Contemporary, a new museum in Los Angeles. Framed in a blonde wood frame and float mounted. On acquisition the print is in good condition.
