Exh: Sol LeWitt, Prints 1970-86, Tate Gallery, Sept.-Nov. 1986 (W3, repr.)

These six woodcuts (see also P77013) represent the images which LeWitt published as a project for Artforum, vol.20, October 1981, reproduced on the front cover and on pp.59-63. With the exception of P77013, these forms were also executed as wall drawings at Paula Cooper Gallery, New York in October 1981 (see Sol LeWitt: Wall Drawings 1968-1984, exh. cat., Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven and Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Ct., 1984, pp.130-1, no.356, repr. pp.133 and 192). The configurations of P77014, P77015, P77016, P77017
and P77018
are reproduced in Sol LeWitt: Isometric Drawings, Paula Cooper Gallery and John Weber Gallery, New York 1982. The only difference lies in the orientation of the cube which is drawn as though seen from the left. The blocks for the prints were cut by Michael Berden in Boston from drawings supplied by the artist. According to Marian Goodman of Multiples Inc., P77013
was executed approximately one year before P77014, P77015, P77016, P77017
and P77018
and was made as a single image. P77014, P77015, P77016, P77017
and P77018
were printed as a set of five. The reason for the set being produced in a smaller edition size than P77013
was purely technical, owing to the difficulty of obtaining an even density of black. Each block was printed five times.
The set of five woodcuts are isometric projections of forms drawn out of a cube. For a discussion of LeWitt's method of making these projections see the 1986 Tate Gallery exhibition catalogue p.14.
In the Tate Gallery Report 1984-6
all six prints were catalogued incorrectly as ‘Untitled'.
